Eastern Red Columbine

NJ Ecotype (grown from seed)

  • Herbaceous perennial; 1-2’ tall

  • Red and yellow nodding flowers; blooms spring to early summer

  • Bloom time provides early season pollen & nectar as first pollinators begin to emerge

  • Semi-evergreen in cooler conditions

  • Location of nectar requires retrieval from long-tongued bees, butterflies, hawk moths, and hummingbirds

  • Host plant to the Columbine Duskywing

  • Spreads via seed non-aggressively; hybridizes easily with other Aquilegia
