Common Milkweed

Grown from seed

  • Herbaceous perennial; 3-5’ tall

  • Drooping umbels of reddish, purple; flowers bloom in summer

  • Over 450 species of insects feed on various parts of Common Milkweed including butterflies, bumblebees, wasps, ants, Red Milkweed Beetles, Milkweed Tussock Moths, and the Large (Oncopeltus fasciatus) and Small (Lygaeus kalmii) Milkweed Bugs

  • Host plant to the caterpillars of the Monarch Butterfly

  • Spreads somewhat aggressively via seed and rhizomes
