Eastern Star Sedge

Grown from seed

  • Semi-evergreen, perennial sedge; 12” tall

  • Star-shaped flowers emerge in the spring; dark-green foliage can reach a foot tall before beginning to droop; acts as green mulch for nearby taller plants by cooling soil & outcompeting weeds

  • Thrives in medium soil and partial to full shade; a good choice for shade and woodland gardens

  • Host plant to various butterflies, skippers, stink bugs, grasshoppers and moths including the Clemens’ Cosmopterix Moth

  • Small mammals and birds (wild turkey, sparrows, towhees, etc.) forage on seeds in fall/winter

  • Spreads slowly, primarily through seed dispersal
