Spotted Joe-Pye Weed

NJ Ecotype (grown from seed)

  • Herbaceous perennial; 3-5’ tall

  • Flat clusters of pinkish-purple flowers emerge from rose-colored stems; flowers bloom from summer to early fall

  • Nectar is sought after by various butterflies and skippers; foliage is eaten by caterpillars of Three-Lined Flower Moth, Joe-Pye Weed Borer Moth, and Clymene Moth

  • Seeds eaten by songbirds, such as the Swamp Sparrow, in fall and winter

  • Reaches its max height in moist, rich conditions, but due to its strong stems, tends to remain upright; spreads somewhat aggressively via seed and rhizomes
