Eastern Red Cedar

NJ Ecotype (grown from seed)

*Some seedling stock may be available in 2025

  • Evergreen softwood tree; medium growth rate; 20-40ft tall on average as a specimen tree, but can reach up to 90ft in forests

  • Dioecious; brown, cone-like flowers bloom in spring

  • Female plants produce blue cones (juniper berries) in the fall; incredible source of winter food for small mammals and birds (cedar waxwings, juncos, mockingbirds, bluebirds, etc.)

  • Host plant to the Juniper Geometer and Juniper Hairstreak

  • One of the more effective native trees at reducing soil errosion caused by wind; therefore a great windbreak species

  • Can withstand drought & extremes in both high/low temps
