NJ Ecotype (grown from seed)

  • Perennial grass; 3-5ft tall

  • Clump forming, warm season grass; reddish-purple seedheads; golden in autumn

  • Valued for its ability to stabilize soil and abate erosion; can be used for low windbreak plantings in crop fields

  • Host plant to Tawny-Edged Skipper, Delaware Skipper and Dotted Skipper

  • Provides both winter food (seeds) and cover (foliage) for gamebirds, song birds and small mammals

  • Can spread aggressively via seed dispersal and rhizomes; management required in small landscape plantings
