Black Eyed Susan

NJ Ecotype (grown from seed)

  • Herbaceous short-lived perennial; 1-3ft tall

  • Golden-yellow petals surround a brown center; blooms early summer to fall

  • Attracts a diverse number of pollinators including bees, wasps, moths, butterflies, beetles and sawflies (the larvae of which are an important food source for many species of birds)

  • Larval host to the Bordered Patch and Gorgone Checkerspot

  • Grows particularly well in poor soils; less so in fertilized soils

  • Seeds attract various songbirds, especially goldfinches
