Old Field Goldenrod,

  • Herbaceous perennial; 1-2ft tall

  • Clusters of yellow flowers grow on grayish-green stems; blooms late summer through autumn

  • Thrives in dry, nutrient-depleted soils such as rocky slopes; one of the shortest goldenrods; great species for butterfly gardens, rock gardens, meadows, etc.

  • Large numbers of pollinators and predatory insects visit the flowers in fall including carpenter bees, sweat bees, plasterer bees, bumblebees, thread-waisted wasps, the goldenrod soldier beetle, butterflies, moths, and more

  • Various songbirds eat the seeds in fall and winter including juncos, chickadees, and goldfinches

  • Can spread aggressively in ideal conditions
