New York Aster

Grown from seed

  • Herbaceous perennial; 1-3ft tall

  • Bluish-purple, and sometimes white, ray flowers with red to yellow discs; mostly smooth stems with narrow leaves; blooms late summer to fall

  • Similar species to New England Aster, but shorter & smoother

  • Attracts large numbers of fall pollinators, especially long-tongued bumblebees, moths, skippers, and beetles

  • Seeds are an important winter food source for songbirds

  • Host plant to the Silvery Checkerspot and Pearl Crescent

  • Self-seeder, forms colonies due to long rhizomes; easily divided & transplanted every few years
