Swamp Milkweed;
Rose Milkweed

Grown from seed

  • Herbaceous perennial; 2-5’ tall

  • Clusters of pink/purple flowers top tall stems; blooms in summer

  • Various species of insects feed on different parts of Swamp Milkweed including butterflies, bumblebees, wasps, ants, Red Milkweed Beetles, the Milkweed Tussock Moth, the Swamp Milkweed Leaf Beetle (Labidomera clivicollis) and the Large (Oncopeltus fasciatus) and Small (Lygaeus kalmii) Milkweed Bugs

  • Host plant to the caterpillars of the Monarch Butterfly and Queen Butterfly

  • One of the best native plant options for wet clay soil; good choice for rain gardens or wetland plantings

  • Spreads less aggressively than Common Milkweed, but will spread in ideal conditions via seed and rhizomes
